Wild horses capture our imagination. They are beautiful and majestic. They symbolize strength as they overcome adversity and thrive. And maybe above all, we see them as symbols of freedom and survival.
When I photographed these amazing horses, I was truly in awe of them. I used a telephoto lens to give them their space, and they approached me so much closer than I could have imagined. I was surrounded by them. This allowed me to take these close-up photographs, to capture their individuality in vivid detail.
These wild horses of Theodore Roosevelt National Park descended from domestic horses. They survive and even thrive in the seemingly unforgiving badlands and brutal upper Midwest winters. They form herds, families, and relationships, overcoming adversity. This series is my celebration of their strength, resilience, and beauty.
